It is easy to tax everything, but the analysis would be needed first. A distinction must be made between areas where the tax should be high, where it should be lower,f and where it should not be at all. I am not going to make sure that there is no need to pay taxes in this area. But if they are paid by the companies that run the tournament, it is not fair to charge players a tax. It turns out that it is paid twice. The abolition of income tax would benefit everyone. There is one important nuance that the legislature obviously does not understand. The tax is not payable on profits, but on costs in excess of 3,000 bucks. If a player loses 10,000 bucks in a year but pays out five thousand, he must also pay tax. That is not right.
Face-to-face poker in has also become “immersed”. Why?
The new generation of players probably does not know that there was once an active live poker life. Championships were held, which were also open to participants from abroad. Exactly ten years ago - in April 2011 - the championship took place with a deposit of 1000 bucks, which would still be a significant amount today. Smaller stakes tournaments took place in parallel. The Norwegians held their national championship with us because they are prohibited from gambling in person by law. Major international companies such as Poker Stars and Unibet also hosted tournaments in Riga. But then the tax on the tournament tables was raised quickly, and at that time we realized that we would no longer have a significant “off-line” tournament. I will not say exactly, but it seems that the license cost 1000 lats or 1000 bucks for each tournament table. Imagine about 300 players coming to the tournament, they need to provide 30-50 tables and that means paying a huge amount. But the income from organizing tournaments is not high. They are only 10% of the tournament fees, but this amount must cover the rent of the premises, the salary of the dealers, and the like. It is impossible to earn money by spending huge sums on tables. The latter came to in December 2013 from Unibet and realized that the costs were too high. Ever since then, everything has stopped. Before the pandemic, there were only daily tournaments at Olympic Casino, as they use the license all year round. But there aren’t many tables - in fact, these tournaments are for the local public.
